This homemade costume for families entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Natalie, the 'Steampunk Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Elves' costume creator:
This is me, my husband, and our five kids. We wanted to dress up together with a steampunk theme. When my bearded husband found his leather pilot helmet, he thought of Santa Claus as the quintessential bearded pilot. And so we became the Santa family. I made his coat out of two gray thrift store coats sewn together to make it into a long Victorian coat. I then spray painted it red and sewed on the fur lining and steampunk gears. We spray painted stripes on thrift store pants for my husband and oldest son. My husband sewed together several black thrift store purses to create his toy sack. I made and bought corsets for my girls and myself, and we created all our accessories by spray painting and rub 'n' buffing old toys, soccer shin guards, keys, bowls, tools, and my son's old physics set (which had a lot of gears and wheels.) My dress was my mother's Homecoming dress from 1970! Our "elves" are equipped with all the tools needed to make toys, including our oldest son's homemade jet-pack. We made the two top hats out of yoga mats, epoxy, and spray paint. We took this photo on Halloween on an old train in Heber, Utah.
