A word from Rachael, the 'Maleficent' costume creator:
After seeing Maleficent earlier in the year my 7 year old daughter Chloe was in love. She immediately wanted to be her for Halloween. I love a challenge and love designing so I was happy to make it happen for her.
For the headpiece I paper mache'd her head to make the base with the widows peak. After it dried I glued fleece inside for cushion. I added pleather and lycra to the cap. I made the horns with felt and lycra and stuff them. That way if she dropped them they would be durable. I hand sewed the horns on and the finished lycra fabric pieces.
For the dress I found this great purple sparkly fabric and made a sort of princess dress with draped sleeves. The cape is made from a shiny lycra like the headpiece and horns. I added cardboard in the collar for stiffness.
The scepter is made with a Christmas ornament filled with glow in the dark paint. It is attached to a wooden dowel with electrical tape. The 'vines' around the bulb are from tin foil twisted and wrapped with electrical tape. At that point I was trying to make due with what I had around the house.
The wings I purchased at Joann Fabrics for 50% off! For the makeup I did highlighting and contouring for dramatic cheekbones. Red lips and light purple eyes with yellow accents. Kept it simple for a little girl. Overall I spent about 50$ on this costume and 15 hours of work.
It turned out more perfect than I could have anticipated. Hope you like it as much as I do!
