A word from Shannon, the 'Sesame Street' costume creator:

I wanted to do matching Sesame Street costumes for my whole family and for the life of me I couldn’t find a big bird costume anywhere!
So I decided to make my own. I don’t own a sewing machine so armed with a glue gun and a picture of big bird I went to the fabric store to pick out my material.

1.) First I chose yellow fleece for the big bird dress. I took an existing dress of mine and simply traced around it leaving a 2 inch seam allowance. Cut around , turned inside out and glue all around the seams. Turned inside out and presto! Dress is made. Then I ordered off amazon yellow ostrich feather ( a yellow feather boa or yellow feathers would have worked too) I glued the feathers on in strips and my dress was complete!

2.) next, the feet ( my favourite ) I drew big ol’ Bird feet with three toes on orange fleece fabric. I wanted oversized feet so I made them extra
Large ( I folded the fabric in half and cut two per foot(
Again I put inside out , glued along edges and turned inside out. I stuffed with dollar store cotton batting and inserted my shoe into the big bird foot to complete the look.
Then I added Velcro on the inside of the leg to keep closed.
Repeat for second foot
Finally the rings on big birds legs, I took
Rope and covered with orange fleece and glued onto the legs. Sounds easy but this part actually took quite a while

3.) Lastly, my big bird head piece. I took round styrofoam balls from the dollar store and covered with pink felt to make the eyelid. The felt stuck to the styrofoam ball nicely so very little glue was needed. I added a blue strip of felt to each eye and two black circles for the eyes to finish the look
Then I cut out a cardboard half circle to
Give my head piece height and covered with yellow felt , then proceeded to glue it to a headband ( I already had)
I covered the yellow felt with yellow feathers I got from the dollar store. This turned out surprisingly good!
I took a styrofoam cylinder and cut in half for the beak.
I covered with yellow felt and glued it onto the head piece.

That’s it! I was so happy how it turned out and the best part my kids loved it :)
