Mama Beehive and Baby Bee Costumes

Mom the beehive and baby the bee

Costume type:  Costumes for Families
Category:Halloween Costumes

This homemade costume for families entered our 2013 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Jordan, the 'Mama Beehive and Baby Bee' costume creator:

My wife is wearing the beehive and my 8 month old daughter is wearing the bee. The beehive was 100% custom made from my wife and her creativity. We decided to make this costume since my baby is making a buzzing type noise for talk right now. I just wanted to say with hard work and creativity, things can really turn out.

What is the beehive made out of?

I made the beehive out of insulation for copper pipe and then spray painted tan. The bees were made out of pom poms and pipe cleaners.

How did you made the hat part? Did you glue the foam pipe together or tie with string?

How did you connect the foam together?

I am in the process of making a hive too. Hot glue seems to work well. I started the bottom layer off by covering a hula hoop with the pipe insulation for a solid base.

How did you use hot glue? I tried and it started melting the piping inhalation

Check to see if you are using high or low temp glue/glue gun. Low worked for me.

What was used to hold it up?

Hi Tammy, I used florist wire as fine as I could find and at approx 10 in sections I would wrap it around two width of tubing and twist like a bread tie. That kept them together vertically. I got glued the ends together. However if the hot glue is not working for you duck tape works wonders. Use the matte camo one since paint will stick better to the matte. If you don't have access to that just use a fine grit sand paper on the duck tape once on to knock off the shine. Good luck. Also I bought the tan spray paint but also used the tan texture spray paint over it.
