Jet Pack Boy Costume

Jet Pack Boy Costume

Costume type:  Costumes for Boys
Category:Halloween Costumes

This homemade costume for boys entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Nancy, the 'Jet Pack Boy' costume creator:

This is my son Ethan wearing his optical illusion jet pack boy costume. Probably the most key points to his costume are the fake legs and the flames. The flames are created by sewing strips of fabric on a skirt. I also glued some to the bottom of the jet pack. The best way I have found to make fake legs is to wrap a subjects leg in Saran wrap then wrap with strips of duct tape. Use strips instead of one continuous piece so that it doesn't become too tight. Cut a line down the leg to remove the tape. It doesn't matter where you cut it because you just tape it back up with duct tape. Fill with plastic grocery bags. For the buttocks section I used two balloons taped to the top of my fake legs. I wrap tape around them then popped them and again filled with plastic bags. This was the most realistic and lightest (very important when dealing with young kids) way I could find.

How or what did you attach the fake legs to? I'm curious if everything is one piece or separate pieces and if separate how are they attached. It looks awesome!

Thank you!! The fake legs are separate from the shirt of flames. Since the legs are made out of a duct tape frame I was able to just duct tape a belt onto the legs and run the belt through my sons belt loops on his jeans that are under the skirt. It's cold here on Halloween. As long as you attach the belt towards the top of your fake legs it should sit correctly and not droop over.
