A word from Maura, the 'Mad Hatter Tea Party' costume creator:
This is our family costume. My daughter and son picked Alice in Wonderland as their theme this year. My son chose The Mad Hatter, my daughter chose Alice, my husband is the King of Clubs and I am the Queen of Hearts. I made or re-purposed all of our costumes. The King of clubs is a large format print I made in photoshop and glued onto a poster board $4 plus the crown I made by tracing an old crown we had laying around and added elastic $1.40, The Mad Hatter costume is an old suit we cut up to make the jacket and pants. I used the pant legs to add a tail to the jacket. I also added ribbon embellishments and lace to give it the mad hatter look. I sewed the bow tie from scape fabric. The pants are a pair of old jeans that were ripped on one leg, so I cut off the leg and added part of the pant leg from the outgrown suit. My son only wanted one leg done, hence the one leg. The hat I made out of old cereal boxes I covered with fabric. I glued buttons onto metal wire and hand wrote the size card. The Alice costume I sewed using basic broad cloth. Using a fabric coupon all the dress material was $4. I added ribbon to the bottom, and made the apron with $2 worth of white fabric. Added a bow she already had and shoes and socks. Her special piece is her necklace. I went to a salvage yard and purchased an old skeleton key and added it to a black string. The Queen of Hearts was an idea I came up with to get out of sewing an entire dress. I made an apron and wore clothes I already had in my closet. I also made the crown by tracing an old birthday crown we had laying around. I think for the money we put into it, we got a lot and we are certainly having fun with it at our Mad Hatter Tea Party!
