A word from Tracie, the 'A Christmas Story' costume creator:
Our family went as A Christmas Story this year. My son was Ralphie in his cowboy costume. I bought a plain khaki button down shirt and got glued the rhinestones, sequins stars, and fringes on it. I got a cheap cowboy costume and used the chaps that came with it, and found a hat at the dollar tree. I painted the hat to match his shirt and glued the rhinestones and a star to that as well. He also had a pair of sunglasses with the lenses removed.
For the leg lamp, I just used a large lamp shade and hot glued the fringes across the bottom. We attached a strand of battery powered lights to the inside. For the legs, I had a pair of fishnets and a pair of black leggings. I cut one leg out of the leggings so only one leg had the fishnets. A black shirt and black heels completed the costume.
For the fragile box, we just used a cardboard box. We cut holes out for the arms and head. We used wood-look contact paper to make it look like a wooden box, then colored in the letters and lines with a marker. Lastly, we glued shreds of packing paper around the top.
My daughter also went as the degranged bunny. I just bought a pair of pink footed pajamas and a headband with bunny ears attached. I cut slits in the hood and just slipped the ears through. I made small ears and a nose out of felt, alone with some googly eyes and glued all of that to the feet to make little bunny faces on the feet.
