A word from Frances, the 'A Nod to Mo Willems - Pigeon, Piggie & Elephant' costume creator:
Don't let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Piggie & Elephant (Gerald)! All wonderful books by Mo Willems. My children agreed to be Piggie and Elephant and so naturally I had to be the Pigeon!
The costume looks really funny as I was basing the whole costume on Mo Willems' drawings of Pigeon, Piggie & Gerald (the Elephant). With the Pigeon, I had to face to the side so that it would look like Pigeon with the eyes.
For all 3 costumes, they are essentially one big poncho where I added arms and tails. They are all made out of fleece so we were able to stay warm and layer underneath during Halloween just fine. I used this Youtube video to put them together - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3D5UqgQwgE&t=336s
The adding arms/sleeves onto a round poncho was difficult and definitely messed up the Pigeon's arm holes where there was too much fabric in the back so had to sew those a bit together so it would slope forward. I made the shape of the arms (whether it be for the Pigeon, Piggie or Gerald), sewed them together and pulled them inside out with a nice arm hole cut so your hands could still be used when holding the trick or treat bag.
The tails were added with some heavy wire to keep it in place. Pigeons had to be filled with stuffing and an extra wire had to go from the length of the tail to inside the poncho where I had the wire wrapped around me so that the tail could be kept up. Piggie's tail was just twisted wire and Elephants was just a regular tail that hung down.
The Elephant wore fake glasses and made an elephant nose using heavy wire and stuffing. I wrapped/glued that around an already made fabric mask so it was easy to take on and off.
Piggie had all her features sewed onto the hood. Pigeon's eyes and collar were sewed on as well.
This costume was definitely a huge hit to those that know Mo Willem's book characters! Definitely brought a smile to adult and children's faces!
