Homemade Alien Costume

I first wanted to make the "Alien" costume because of all the details it had and how a striking visual impact it has on people. I thought it was going to be a challenge to make and it was which makes it more satisfying now that it is completed. The majority of the materials used for my costume were plastic sheeting, yoga mat foam, cushion foam, aluminum foil, and various types of tubing. The chest piece is made of yoga mat foam ribs wrapped with plastic sheeting heated up with a heat gun to make a wrinkly effect. Held together with hot glue and plastic tubing as the structure. Abs are made of yoga mat foam as well. The back horns of the alien are made with cushion foam and the spinal cord that becomes the tail is foam with aluminum foil details. The hand and feet are made from plastic sheeting that represented the skin and foam that represents the nails. The head was the more time consuming to make because of the approach I took. I shaped the head with cotton and plastic, and added a layer of paper-mache. On top of that I added metal mesh for stronger support, and then another layer of paper-mache but with a glue mixture of plaster of paris, glue, and water. All of that dried up to become the top of the head, the rest of the head was made from plastic sheeting with the same heated treatment to create the wrinkly effect. Inside the head I used plastic bottles to make a strong structure to keep it from moving around. The final details were foam teeth, and plastic tubing on the sides of the head. Black and white spray paint was used to finalize the costume.
