This homemade costume for babies entered our 2013 Halloween Costume Contest.

I made this costume for my daughter Sadie who is 11 months old. This homemade costume idea all started with my obsession for making knit wigs for her because she barely has any hair. You can check out more pictures and other knit wig designs I made for on her instagram account @lil_ms_sadie. I already had the mermaid wig in mind long before Halloween came around so I decided to make her the entire costume so she could be Ariel from The Little Mermaid. For the wig I crocheted a beanie and attached the yarn piece to it and designed the style of the hair. For the top, I found elastic sequin fabric which I sewed into three separate pieces, two for the arms and one bigger piece for bodice and connected them at the underarm. For the tail, I found netted blue sequin fabric with some stretch in it. I used about 1/2 of a yard of the fabric. I cut a rectangular piece and folded it in half lengthwise and sewed a seam to her size about 2/3 down. Then folded the bottom up to form the fins which I connected to the lengthwise seam where I left off. The only thing store bought was her headband which was from jcrew and the plastic fork is her brother’s toy. The overall cost for this costume was about $25.
