A word from Paula, the 'Aunt Jemima' costume creator:
I love Halloween and I try to think of something original for every costume I create. This is how I came up with Aunt Jemima. I haven't seen an Aunt Jemima on Halloween and so she was created for a Halloween party for work. However it was such a hit in which I did win best costume, I decided to go to several Halloween contests that were going on in our town. I place 1st at our American Legion post and came home with 3rd place at a tavern who was judging later in that evening.
I initially started with a store-bought pattern which helped me sew the dress together. I bought the red and white material. I cut out the dress as instructed on the pattern's directions. But that was the only pattern I used. Once I sewed the dress, I then began working on the apron, bandana and kerchief. I "eye-balled" my sizes that I thought they all should be, cut them out and sewed them on my trusty ole' sewing machine I have had since 1984. I used my computer to produce my patch and transfer paper to iron it on to my apron. My gloves are brown surgical gloves that I glued and polished artificial nails to the tips. Brown, dark makeup for the face, black hair spray for my exposed hair and I went the extra mile and went to a beauty shop and had my hair done in "corn-rows". Oh, a friend loaned me her petticoat from her wedding to help fill the bottom of my dress out. I definitely do not have a set of "knockers" this large, therefore I did buy a extra large bra and placed blown up balloons in them.
At my work party, one individual guy could stop touching my breasts. He really like them! No sexual harassment, it was all in fun. With the outfit being a success, my thought was to include my husband in next years Halloween event as Uncle Ben (the rice guy) or Uncle Moses but he says No. So I am on my own or I will need a new guinea pig for my projects.
