A word from Caitlin, the 'Baby Porcupine' costume creator:

My 14 month old son is wearing the costume. I got the idea of seeing a couple porcupine costumes on Pinterest. I took those photos I saw and created my own costume, using elements from those inspiration photos. I bought a dark grey sweat suit from kohl’s (on sale and woth a 30% off coupon) paid 9$ for it. I got 1/2 yard of fur fabric from Joann fabrics (6$) and had a lot of left over fur. I traced the sweatshirt outline onto the fur, adjusted the head how I wanted it and cut it out. I then sewed the fur onto the sweatshirt in 2 pieces. One for the hold, one for the body. I then took 1/4” foam (2 large sheets of it from Joann fabrics, on sale, 16$)drew lines on with a large chalk peni already had. I cut the quills out of the foam into small strips of varying sizes. I then individually got glued each quill into the base of the fur. It was time consuming but easy! He loved wearing it and if the quills got bent from sitting in the wagon, they easily were straightened back out!

Do you by any chance make this costume to order? I have a grandson who will be almost 13 months this halloween and I fell in love with your costume!

Sorry, I don't. I just made it for my son last year And as easy as it was to make, it was too time consuming for me to make again with now a newborn and grad school and work.

Did you put quills on the pants or just the sweatshirt?

#4 comment by Caitlin September 23, 2020

Just the sweatshirt. The quills naturally fell 𠆍own' making it look like they were lower. I did glue them all the way to the bottom of the sweatshirt.

Did you paint the foam quills?

#6 comment by Caitlin September 28, 2020

I used a large chalk marker on the quills- i didn't want the ‘white' to look too bright....so the chalk marker worked well. I originally bought and started with a white paint stick/marker....but it wasn't wide enough and was taking me forever and I had the wide tip chalk marker on hand.

About how long are the quills. I know you said they are varying lengths - what would you say is the range, about?
Amazing job!

The quills are 6-12 inches. I used smaller ones at the top and on the hood. I would add more pictures of the construction but can't figure out how.

What do you mean by "one for the hold and one for the body?"

#10 comment by Caitlin October 9, 2020

Lindsey, it is a typo. I meant ‘hood'.

What kind of glue did you use to glue the quills?

#12 comment by Caitlin October 22, 2020

I used a hot glue gun. I went through a TON of glue.....probably used more than necessary, but I just wanted to be sure they stayed secure with any pulling or tugging on them

So what kind of foam did you use and you just colored it black and white

#14 comment by Kate October 26, 2021

Would you be willing to sell this costume?

I would love to know which exact foam is this and how come it stays straight and not bends and falls? Thank you
