A word from Heidi, the 'Bikehopper' costume creator:
It is I wearing the costume! :) I had been wanting to make something wearable out of a bicycle for a while, and one day found myself enamored with a few grasshoppers climbing up a pole. Their body movements were so fascinating to me, and I saw many parallels in their visual qualities with elements of a bike (e.g. the brake calipers look like their hands, the tread on the rubber wheel references the chevron pattern on their legs, the spokes reference their delicate wings, etc.). I chopped up the bike frame, wheels, and chain and found other parts (cassettes, etc.) to add to the mix. I welded the spokes on to the wheel frame to make wings, stapled painted rubber inner tubes together to make the body, and used a combination of pop rivets, copper wire, and glue to fasten brake handles, etc. to the helmet. A really fun, sucessful costume, but a bit of a liability on the dance floor with all that amateur welding and grinding. :)
