Boo from Monsters, Inc. Costume

My daughter REALLY wanted to be Boo from Monsters, Inc. for Halloween this year. I researched the movie and brainstormed how to make Boo in her monster costume. I think this costume really came together nicely. It took quite a bit of work, but it was well worth the effort.
We made the costume by sewing “curtain rod” pockets onto scaled fabric on the top, bottom and in the middle. Then added batting onto the back of the fabric to make it look puffy. Inserted a hula hoop into each of the pockets and used binder clips to hold the back together. Used a large bowl for the head. After punching two holes in the head, we glued foam all around the outside of the bowl and then glued fabric onto the foam. Used strong wire to attach eyeballs through the holes in the bowl. The eyeballs are made from a plastic Christmas ornament that opens – painted black and the wire inserted – with googly eyes glued on them. We added thick yarn for the hair and foam glued to popsicle sticks then glued onto the back of the hula hoop for the teeth. Cut a hole on each side for the arms to come through. The arms and legs are from silver fabric sewn into pointed gloves and socks.
The hardest part of this costume was coming up with how to keep it in place and how to get the head to stay in place. We cut a piece of thick cardboard, painted it black, and glued it to the fabric just under the first hula hoop. Then I glued a metal floral wreath under the cardboard to help hold the head in place by attaching a wreath holder (bent where we needed it) to inside the bowl with glue and wrapped/bent the other end around the floral wreath. We spent about $45 making this costume.
