A word from Vanessa, the 'Carnival Sweets' costume creator:
Mother and Sons wearing Soda with Cotton Candy and Popcorn. I handmade each costume. Cotton Candy is Tulle glued to a sweatshirt, with clear wrapping cellophane glued around it and tied off around the neck with silk ribbon. Soda is a 5 gallon bucket and top spray painted red and gray with the Coca-Cola logo hand painted onto it. I cut out holes for his head, arms, legs and a hole for the straw. PVC pipe was used for the straw with an elbow joint. Popcorn is 4 foam poster boards painted with red stripes and hand painted the fresh popcorn, then taped from the inside and glued on the outside edges to make a box. Foam spray insulation is what I made the popcorn out of, I sprayed blobs onto newspaper and let them dry to the touch for about 15 mins. Once they were about to be handled the inside was still wet enough to form into popcorn shapes. I squeezed the middle of them to make a rounded top and a flat bottom that stuck out around it, I then used a razor to cut triangles out of the bottom half to add detail. Once the popcorn was dry I glued it to the popcorn box, glued some shoulder straps from silk ribbon to the inside and glued a piece of popcorn to each strap. And that’s it, how I made our Carnival Sweets Costumes!
