This homemade costume for families entered our 2016 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Summer, the 'Aladdin Family' costume creator:

For the genie costume I ordered a blue leotard from amazon and I attached fake spiderwebs to the costume (with spray adhesive and safety pins) to make the smoke. You can't see it here, but I also attached batterie powered lights to make it light up. I attached a lamp to the top of one of my shoes with hot glue to make it look like the smoke was coming out of the lamp. I made my arm cuffs out of gold fabric and my waist band out of fabric that I pinned on. I put my hair up in a bun and sprayed it with black hairspray, then I sprayed the top of my hair blue to blend in with my blue makeup. I attached a beard, painted my face, and the costume was complete.

To make the magic carpet, I got a rectangular board and attached wheels to the bottom. Then, I decorated the top of it with fabric cutouts to look similar to the magic carpet in the movie. We attached a rope so Jasmine could be pulled around from house to house for trick or treating!

For the Aladdin costume, I ordered the differed parts off of the internet, except for the waist band, which was similar to the genie.

Jasmine and Abu were made through Etsy.

What did you use to make the smoke and get it to stay put?

I used fake spider webs and spray adhesive.

You did such a great job on the genie costume! We are doing the exact same things (plus my son will be Raja) for halloween this year and I wasn't sure how to pull off the Genie! Thanks for the inspiration!!

How much webbing did you buy and where did you get it?

#6 comment by Summer McClellan September 4, 2019

I think I bought it online or at a Halloween store. It probably took 2 packages of the cheap webbing.

You said you ordered a blue leotard? Do you have leggings on as well? I'm absolutely doing this with my boyfriend such an awesome homemade costume! And also, where did you get all the decorations for the carpet?

You can get a full body leotard on amazon, legs, hands are all one piece. For the carpet, I printed out the carpet from Aladdin and got different fabrics from Hobby Lobby and made cut outs. I made stencils by hand for the cut outs. I glued it all to a rectangle board. If you glue a lamp to your foot, be careful walking. I tripped several times until it came off! Good luck!!!!!

What kind of face paint did you use?
