A word from Robin, the 'Selena' costume creator:

Selena Quintanilla is such a goddess to me, so for Halloween in 2014 I decided to recreate her last live performance look. This costume was made out of a burgundy stretchy lycra/acrylic fabric very similar to the original color. Selena's real outfit was sparkly, but I found this fabric on the bargain bin for $2 a yard so went with it. As my pattern, I used a pair of high-waisted yoga pants. I cut each leg based on the size of the yoga pants adding a little extra to the length of the waist band and made sure the length of the pant ended at the knee. Once I had that fitting well, I made a simple circle skirt the same circumference as my knee to give it that swishy flemenco pant bottom. I then attached the circle skirts to the knee. I found the best way to make the top was to cut and sew two equal strips of fabric for the straps and pin them to the waist band while the costume was on me. Once I had them pinned to the pants, I crossed them over one another and then tied around my neck like a halter top. I already had the wig but you can buy just a long black wig with bangs. On the makeup I over drew my lips with dark lip liner just like Selena and and did a classic smoky eye. Add some large gold hoops and a bangle and you are Selena! This costume was a big hit. Even though I'm a white girl everyone knew exactly who I was. This costume cost me under $20 to make and I only spent a day on it. I would definitely recommend using a synthetic fabric because it doesn't fray and you won't have to hem the costume.
