This homemade costume for women entered our 2020 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Heather, the 'Claire, Highland Healer' costume creator:
The photos are of myself in the outlander costume I sewed and knitted by hand. The costume was inspired by the Outlander novels and TV series that I love b/c I have also lived in Scotland for some time. I knitted the iconic shaw wrap and arm warmers from patterns in a book called Highland Knits. Never having knit anything so large or complex, I taught myself to read knitting patterns, various stitches and to use different kinds of needles. The skirt and jacket were based on the McCalls sewing pattern but I deviated to better suit my ideas. The skirt was improvised by using two tartan blankets. I also made the traditional "bum roll" to accentuate the bum and hips like the time period once had. Lastly, I fashioned her herbal collection basket from a craft store basket, custom cut wood lid (I also cut) and leather cord. The jacket had hand sew in rings for the lacing, the stomacher was a sewn separate piece and I also sewed the muslin scarf.
I was going to have an Outlander/Scottish Highlands theme party but Covid made me have to cancel plans and I handed out candy instead! I am grateful for this contest so that atleast all of my effort can be seen! :)
THANK YOU!
