A word from Mary, the 'Claw Machine' costume creator:
My daughter is wearing the Claw Machine costume we homemade for her 2016 Halloween costume. I always let me daughter choose what she wants to be and then we get to work making the costume. We were in Walmart one day and on the way out we went past those dreaded machines. She said, Hey I could be a claw machine for Halloween. So we started looking for a box that would work, which we found at Menards-an empty washing machine box. I cut windows out on 3 sides. Although I didn't cut them all the way down and left a portion attached so I could then fold those inside to be the shelf for the animails/prizes to sit on. She then chose the colors of her machine and we spray painted the bottom black and the top a blue. (I would recommend to not use spray paint-I think painting with a paint brush would be cheaper). I started searching for what we could use for the claw. I saw an older mixer whisk attachment at Goodwill and decided I could cut that apart and it would look like a claw. I attached it to a toilet paper tube to give it more length and then hot glued it to the top of the box. I glued and ziptied the straps in. We hot glued the battery operated lights in found at Dollar Tree. Took an old handheld pac man game and covered the pacman parts with black tape, put a whole in the box to feed the cord thru then zip tied it to the box for the joystick part. My daughter then got inside the box and hot glued the vinyl clear tablecloth material to the three sides for "windows". She also made the 25 cent signs. We also made a flap so it looked like a prize had been won on the outside of the box. My daughter received lots of compliments at the campground trick or treat!
