A word from Olivia, the 'Baby Oompa Loompa' costume creator:
My 15 month old son, Tristan Cottingham, is wearing an adorable Oompa Loompa costume. He was definitely the highlight of the evening during the trick or treating festivities. This costume was so much fun to make, probably because I was anticipating the final reveal! Now I will say this costume did take a little bit of work but the hardest part was getting it all put together on a one year old! I started out trying to find a brown turtleneck onesie (I wanted a onesie so that I didn't have to worry about tucking it into the pants). I did not have a lot of luck finding the onesie so I ended up getting a white one and dying it brown. The onesie came from amazon for about $10 and the dye I bought at Wal-Mart for $3. I bought brown socks for $3 and the white fleece pants at Old Navy for $6. They were actually girls but they worked just fine for my little boy. I bought brown buttons at Wal-Mart for about $1 and sewed them to the front of the pants. For the stripes on the collar, sleeves, and socks I used masking tape. I thought this was a great alternative to painting the stripes on since I could just pull the tape off and use the turtleneck and socks for future outfits. For the suspenders I used white ribbon that I had on hand and attached with velcro! I loved using the velcro, since I could just detach when my little tot got annoyed with the suspenders. I criss crossed the ribbon in the front and back. I had brown sandals that he wore during the summer that still fit perfectly, and attached yarn pom poms with glue to the top of them. I tucked the pants into his socks and stuffed the sides of the pants with wash cloths to give them that "Oompa" look. I styled his hair and then sprayed it green with Halloween hairspray and used white Halloween makeup for his eyebrows. I would have liked to paint his face orange but he would not cooperate for that part. My final touch was his "sugar sack" since that's what the Oompa Loompa's carried around. I bought a canvas bag from Hobby Lobby for $3 and printed a transferable "SUGAR" template and ironed it onto the front. The entire costume was about $30 for my cutie's Oompa Loompa look! He was the talk of the neighborhood and caught the attention of everyone he passed!
