This homemade costume for kids entered our 2013 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Charlotte, the 'Gumball Machine' costume creator:

This is my 5 year old son Manny. I wanted something fun and colorful. I wanted all people to recognize the costume and smile. His smile and the costume is joy.

To make... start with plywood make a circle and glue gun two thread spools underneath to use as handles. Drill metal rods and then cover the panels with vinyl and 1 with netting for airflow. Buy red felt and velcro it to the plywood. Staple elastic to make suspenders to hold it up. Use foam to make holder for outgoing gumballs and glue gun a ball on it. Fill with around 60 balls. Buy 12 inch foam circle and cover with red felt for lid.

How did he walk around and do you add candy to the bottom or did hedothis just for a costume.

#16 comment by Charlotte October 22, 2013

I had to hold his candy bag. Since the hula hoop on the bottom is big his legs are fine while walking. He walks fine because he is holding up the costume with the spool handles and the double elastic suspenders we made help with the support. Thank you for asking.

I am in the process of making a gumball machine costume. I am currently stuck at how to get the vinyl on the globe part. Would you be willing to share any tips you may have. I'm on day 4 of trying to figure it out and I'm too frustrated now to think of a realistic solution. Any help would be so very gratefully appreciated!!

We hot gLued each panel individually. Then we used scissors to trim the excess. Then I used shiny silver duct tape to make this silver portion stand out. Hopefully this helps you.

Can you tell me where you found the balls for this costume? Also, what are the rods? Did you have to bend them on your own to get the right shape? THANKS!!! :)

#27 comment by Lulu February 9, 2015

What is the plastic part?

#28 comment by Charlotte February 15, 2015

The gumballs are the balls your children jump into at a play area. ..they can be purchased at a lease toy store.

What plastic part are you referring to Lulu?
