A word from Matt, the 'Adventure Time BMO' costume creator:

My son decided this year he would like to be BMO from Adventure Time.
I thought long and hard about how to approach the costume and decided the only way I could do it, is to build it from scratch.

I used a cardboard box (double thick walls) from an old klipsch speaker system.
I covered the box with fabric sprayed with super 77 adhesive, then either used super 77 or hot glue adhere all the detail work. All shapes/details are hand cut from pieces of felt and then glued on. I created all templates on my computer using Adobe Illustrator and sizing it appropriately with my measurements for my particular box. I printed each button, eyeball, vent, port out on paper. Cut out the shapes and used them as templates to cut my felt pieces. I decided to make the felt appear 3D by using complimentary darker shades in the backgrounds of each shape. Inside the box it is lined with foam padding where the shoulders rest against the box.

For reference I used still shots taken from Adventure Time DVDs. I had to modify the direction and placement of the speaker holes and BMO going down the side to align with my son's arms. Otherwise the holes would be at the very bottom and only his hands would have fit through. To be more functional I needed to move the arm holes up, therefore swapping all the BMO text and speaker hole positions. I also decided to cut a hole for his head because as we all know, young children do not like wearing masks for long periods of time, so again this was a functional decision. Color choices were also made from multiple reference sources and made to match as close as possible. Lastly was the decision to add the battery door. This was the detail to push the costume to the next level. In the cartoon BMO's batteries fall out once to dry and I decided this would be a fun detail to add. I hand designed and cut the batteries to a 3D perspective and then added the opening door with ribbons glued to art board then pushed through the cardboard and hot glued to the inside of the box. Lastly, the closure is sealed with 4 bucky ball "cubes" (super strong magnets).

I hope all the BMO fans out there enjoy and please vote! Thanks

I just wanted to thank you for posting this incredible costume. My son wants to be BMO this year, but I cannot find a good costume to buy. I just started last night, mostly following all your directions. Its coming out great! You did such an awesome job. I'm hoping I can get close to it. Thank you again! And happy Halloween!

Seana, no problem. I'm glad my description helps. Cutting the felt shapes and then using a lot of hot glue was key. If you need any more help let me know! Thanks for your kind words.
