A word from Glen, the 'Capt. Jack Sparrow' costume creator:
Everybody knows Jack Sparrow, but only hardcore fans know his attire changes every movie. His dreadlocks and wig paraphernalia increases every sequel. His accessories differ every time. So, that’s quite a challenge to duplicate. This version of Capt. Jack is from the 4th movie and it’s 90% screen accurate and 90% homemade, head to toe. The hat, wig, coat, vest, pants, sash, boots and everything were carefully crafted to be movie accurate as possible. Hundreds of pictures were used as reference and a lot of film viewing was done so that every detail of the movie version was duplicated. The costume consists of hundreds of small items, like coins, beads, bones, feathers, ties, dreads etc. Each of these items has to be in the right place with the right color and specification to really look authentic. It took almost 3 years to find the right materials to complete this project.
In making this costume, I improvised and modified common household materials and store bought items. I also kept in mind that accuracy and detail were all important to perfect this costume. I have incorporated different materials like wood, leather, epoxy resin, plastic funnel, clay, liquid latex, foam, wires, real deer bone, synthetic wig, real hair wig, my own hair, gum spirit, and what have you. The hat is from a St. Patrick’s Day hat. The pelts are from a stuff toy. The pair of boots is from the womens section and just added the flaps. The dreads are from a Rasta costume hat. All these materials were altered to make it more legit. It required patience and creativity, open-mindedness and resourcefulness.
