A word from Daniel, the 'Lego Man Chef' costume creator:
I created a Lego Man Chef costume for Halloween after putting away my Lego collection in storage. The chef man happened to fall out of the box onto the floor. I picked it up, looked at the detail on it and got inspired.
As for materials, I used about 8 rectangular poster boards purchased from Office Depot. The poster board served as the structure of the legs, mid-section, and torso. I needed heavy duty scissors to do the cut-outs of the individual pieces. Duct tape was essential for adhering and combining the parts into one.
The mid-section is a combination of a half-cut circular concrete mixer tube that I came across at Home Depot. Poster board was used to connect the parts as an enclosure to the body.
I used matte black paint from Walmart to color all the pieces for a consistent black matte finish on the bottom of the torso, mid-section and both legs.
The hands are made from styrofoam flora holders I purchased from the 99 Cent store. They came in a perfect circular shape and I had to tape two of them together and cut out 1/3 of the circle to create the familiar Lego hands.
I bought an XL white collared shirt from the Goodwill Store and it was a perfect fit to complement the chef costume.
The chef hat was a bit of a challenge to engineer. The top portion is a cat nap bed purchased from Walmart that was painted white. The mid-portion of the hat between the crown and top cap is a For Sale sign. The For Sale sign was cut into multiple pieces, tape together and reinforced with the metal rods that would normally be used to pierce into the ground. The crown part that fits snug atop the Lego Chef head is a large Styrofoam wreath purchased from Michael's crafts store. I used duct tape to hold the pieces together on the inside and used white acrylic paint to paint all the pieces a cohesive white color throughout.
A Lego logo sticker was printed from a laser printer downloaded through Google advertise the Lego toy brand.
I used a combination of black, red and black acrylic paint to add the details on the torso and face for the classic Lego Chef appearance.
The most challenging part of the costume was actually coming up with and creating the iconic Lego Chef face with viewable eyes. The Lego head is a concrete mixer tube purchased from Home Depot. Cutting it to the right proportion was difficult as the product is very heavy grade. Also, coloring the helmet with yellow spray paint took about 10 coatings to get just right. Long waiting periods to paint, dry and reapply. I used a drill to pierce openings in the black eyes, naturally, but the viewability was rather limited to what was in front of you.
Overall, I spent about $100 worth of raw materials and it took 15 hours over 6 days to construct from start to finish. Although quite challenging initially, the final results came out better than expected.
Thank you and hope you enjoy the craftsmanship it took to create this costume.
