A word from Glen, the 'Mashed up Johnny Depp Characters' costume creator:
It all started with one costume for Halloween, my Capt. Jack Sparrow costume. It took me 3 years to complete that project and it was quite a challenge. I continuously upgraded that costume and added stuff to make it movie accurate. Then after the “success” of that costume, I thought of making all the Johnny Depp Characters. So I started collecting items and making the costumes for Sweeney Todd, the Mad Hatter, Edward Scissorhands, Rango, The Tourist, Tonto, etc., all at the same time. As a result, I have bits and pieces of costumes from the different Johnny Depp Characters. I was hoping to finish at least 1 costume but because of money and time constraints it did not materialize. Then I thought, why not put all of the bits and pieces of different characters in one costume. So this was the result, a mash-up of popular Johnny Depp Characters. The coat, breeches, braided beard and the wig I made were from my Jack Sparrow costume. I put together the ribbons socks and shoes for the Mad Hatter. I modified a crow bird from last years Halloween and used it for the character Tonto. I got the yellow sunglass and fabricated the fake cigarette for Raoul Duke of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I made the razor rig holster for Sweeny Todd. I made the sheriff badge and gun holster for Rango. I also made the left hand of Edward Scissorhands. I still have other references there for Johnny Depps other movies. Maybe you can spot them.
The items I used range from common household items to professional products like liquid latex, Prosaide, resin, polymer clay, etc. I even used my own hair and dyed it for Capt. Jacks wig. I bought second hand items from Goodwill, Salvation Army and flea markets then altered them to fit my size. I also used toys and modified them to be more realistic. I used the bottom of a Pringles can for Rangos sheriff badge. Jacks wig is a combination of wool dreads, synthetic and real hair. The wig consists of about a hundred pieces of paraphernalia, including the dreads. I carefully studied the wig and made it to be really 90% movie accurate. Each one, like for example the half blond dread with a criss cross tie has to be in the right place with the right length and color. If you compare my wig with the wig in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, it is like, exactly the same. The coat was made from upholstery material and sewn from scratch. The pattern I used for the coat was the same pattern used in that time period (1700). The left scissorhand was made from plastic swords with chrome finish and shaped/cut accurately with the right length and width. The razor holster was made from the scabbard of the sword I used for the scissorhands. I then covered it with faux leather from an old loveseat. The studs were from dog collars I was going to use for the Edward Scissorhands costume. The bone needle tied on the wig was actually a plastic handle from a spatula. There are so much little items in the costume so I’ll just enumerate them: rose bud, kuchi, wave coin, Chinese coins, Pakistani coins, beads, Chinese lucky charm, Coptic cross, shell accessory, Indian ornament, lace, glove, keys big and small, feathers, bone skulls, ties, spurs and camera. I hope I didn’t miss anything. There’s probably 20 Johnny Depp movies in that costume.
