This homemade costume for boys entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Melissa, the 'Race Car' costume creator:
My son, Owen, has loved race cars & the sound of engines since he has been 1 1/2 years old. Since he's in a wheelchair & already had 4 wheels I decided to build the car around that. He struggles with Epilepsy so to we are using the costume to try to help raise awareness (Epilepsy Awareness month is in November). Thanks to the Danny Did Foundation, my son received a seizure monitor watch & they gave me permission to use their website & logo on the car. Our dog loves to dress up & pose she is the K9 Cop!
I used LOTS of cardboard & duct tape! Once I got the measurements & the car taped together, I painted it. A friend gave me the stickers to make it look more like a real race car. For the headlights & tail lights I used the battery operated push LED lights. For the tail lights I took the back cover off & put some red material inside, then used wire ties to attach them to the car (safe at night AND realistic)! The handlebars & tray for the wheelchair helped to hold the car in place.
Overall cost was under $20.
