This homemade costume for women entered our 2017 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Natalia, the 'Yemaya - Goddess of the Sea' costume creator:
In Yoruba culture, Yemaya is the Goddess who lives and rules over the seas. She rules the waters inhabited by man- where there is swimming, fishing, and essentially, any water reached by the sun. She was believed to have traveled with the slaves from Nigeria as they were stolen from Africa and shipped across the Atlantic during the Transatlantic slave trade. She also protected the souls of those who died and were thrown overboard. To this day, people leave her offerings for this reason.
I made this costume using 100% recycled materials. The crown was made from seashells I collected off the beach here in Miami and fishing net that washed up on the shore. I purchased the fabric and accessories from Goodwill and other thrift stores.
