A word from Erin, the 'Pink Fire Dragon' costume creator:
I made this costume for my 3 year old daughter, who decided months ago after reading a book from the library about a fire dragon, that she wanted to be a fire dragon for Halloween. She wanted spots on her body and spikes on her tail. I got sketching and designed her costume. No part of it was pre-made or store bought-- I didn't even use a purchased pattern! The exterior fabrics are shiny and pretty, giving it a feminine and a mythical feel. The interior is standard lining fabric. Spikes and belly were filled with a layer of batting to keep them soft and childlike. Baby horns and eyeballs were stuffed. The wing fabric was stretched around a wire frame I constructed, to give them their firm, bat-like shape (Bonus points for me, for getting it to fit in her carseat!). I didn't want the typical pajama-type costume, so I made it a dress instead. I loved that she wanted to be a fire dragon when every other little girl her age wants to be Elsa, Snow White, Merida, Ariel, etc. I was pleased to design and make her a costume that allowed to embrace all the best aspects of being a woman-- it's beautiful and feminine, strong and powerful. I was proud to make her something that was a-typical and empowering. We had a lot of fun making this, and she absolutely loved wearing it. Pretty much everyone dropped their jaw, and giggle and squealed at the sight of it! It was a Halloween success!
