This homemade costume for babies entered our 2013 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Christy, the 'Tow Mater the Tow Truck' costume creator:

My 2 year old son asked to be "brown Mater" this Halloween. My husband and I searched for a costume to buy and found nothing worth buying… so we decided to create our own.
My husband used a few boxes and several paper towel tubes for the actual truck base. I added the rope and the "headlight" (one of the battery powered candles). I then did all of the painting and aging of Mater.
I am glad my husband did the design, if I would have it would not have been as detailed and I really think that helped set this off :)
Plus, my son was and still is in love with his costume!

My grandson, Paul was so excited to wear this costume. Mater is a favorite of his. This turned out so well for him, and he is very proud of his costume.

So cute !! Please tell me a few tricks to making a duplicate ! My son would love this !

Kass, my husband constructed it out of cardboard. I used a coffee can lid & part if a board game box for his engine. A cup upside down & painted was his light on top. The fenders were paper towel tubes & I used a battery powered candue light for the single headlight.
We really used his detailed toys as our guide. I painted it, base was spray paint & then acrylic paints added the details. Sponge paintING with several browns & black helped give mater that old, rusted look. I used velcro and cotton webbing for the straps to hold it on my son. Hot glue was my friend also!
Hope that helps. It took us about 2 weeks to complete it in the end.

about how long is Tow Mater?

#12 comment by Christy October 6, 2015

Michelle, it has been a few years, but I think he was about 3 feet long. We split it into 3 sections, the front, the area for my son & the back end. I think overall just make sure your child has room and try to go from there.

What did you use for the wheels?

#14 comment by Christy October 24, 2015

The wheels are black paper plates with the inner circles being kraft cardstock. I cut small black circles for the details.
The plates will crush, but we added small boxes behind each tire to support i .
