A word from Kim, the 'BB-8' costume creator:
William (8) is wearing BB8. He decided he wanted this costume and there was no turning back. I researched the character and some things I could use, but mostly, I just kept coming up with new ideas to make it better.
Need:
-yoga ball -large bowl -flour -newspaper -water -spray insulation foam (approx. $5 at Home Depot: needed 4) -knife -white spray paint -white gesso (Michaels craft store) -a round witches' cauldron -acrylic paint (orange, metallic silver, white (for touch ups), blue and red (for a few details)) -glow ball ($ store) -skinny glow sticks ($ store) -cheap binoculars ($ store)
Steps: Be ready to spend a lot of time on this guy! 1) paper mache a yoga ball, by placing it on a large bowl (that area does not need to be covered since the body will fit there. 2) I sprayed a 3-4 inch layer of spray insulation foam. 3) The spray has to dry (rise) overnight. It will bubble up ALOT. 3) Reshape the sphere using a knife 4) Paper mache 2-3 final layers on top. 5) paint the sphere with white gesso (a primer) and then spray paint (may need 2-3 coats) 6) cut an eye hole in the witches' cauldron (approx. 6"x3") and a small hole towards the top for the glow ball 7) spray paint the witches cauldron (may need 2-3 coats) 8) Start the painting process...use things to help you make the shapes 9) cut a small hole for candy in the large sphere 10) Using spray foam, attach the witches' cauldron (head) to the sphere. 11) Before use, add glow balls and cut tiny holes for glow sticks (antennae).
