A word from Kevin, the 'Dalek from Dr. Who' costume creator:
My son is a huge Dr. Who fan. He asked to dress up as a Dalek from the series. This is the first time I have ever made Halloween Costumes from scratch, and I wasn't sure how the end result would turn out. My goal was to design and build a costume that not only could achieve this look, but I wanted to keep it low cost and lightweight as he would have to wear it! I bought most of the supplies for it from the Dollar Tree, with the exception of Spray Paint and a Large Ball used for paper macheing the top dome ($2.50). We used Foamboard to construct most of the costume as well as Duck Tape to hold it together and for the paint to adhere to. The top dome is constructed out of paper mache. The middle area is posterboard wrapped around 2 hula hoops covered with foamboard and duck tape to give a layered effect. The "bolts" are actually "googily eyes". We added swivel casters to the base so that he appears to "glide" when he walks. For his "arms" we used a toilet plunger (new of course) and a Paint roller cut slightly to modify its appearance. The gold "balls" on the base are actually painted plastic bowls. The "neck" of the costume is constructed of cut foamboard wrapped in Duck Tape. We then hotglued a black shelf liner to the inside to hide his head from view, but still give him an ability to see. The top done has 3 working lights. The light on the eye stalk is a push light, and the 2 dome lights are actually travel size Scope bottle cut from the bottom and glued to the top of the dome. 2 smaller flashlights are glue to the underside and illuminate the scope bottles when turned on. The costume took about 2 months to construct, but was definitely an attention grabber on Halloween night and our son LOVED the attention he got while in costume. "Best Halloween Ever" was a quote he made at one point during the night. Some of photos we are submitting include some "in progress" photos from during the construction
