A word from Nichole, the 'Jack in the Box' costume creator:
Being on a budget...you have to get creative! This costume costed me $3.65! I got the idea from an old jack in the box I saw at a thrift store and thought it'd be awesome to create one. For materials I got one large box for free from Pier 1 Imports. It wasn't the size I needed so I had to cut the box and paper mache the shape I wanted. I also paper mached the lid part and then cut a little area where my son could pop out of. The top I had painted Mattel, which is the brand they used to make on these. I decorated with polka dots as that's the material I had to make my son's costume. Each side I painted a different background color with different coordinated polka dots. The black handle actually turns very smoothly, all made of paper mache. I made a circle in the box, cut it out and wired it to the box. Inside the box I had a stool for my son and a light as well as loud "Jack in the Box" music themed playing. He popped out just in time and wobbled around like the real Jack in the Box. The costume is all sewn and made by me. I used my polka dot material and made buttons, a huge tie, extra strips for design and the hat to match. It was so cute. Lastly, I had this Jack in the Box sitting on a roller so all I had to do was pull my son around. The roller was attached to a rope. This was fun and inexpensive to make! Thanks for the consideration.
