A word from Elizabeth, the 'Kakamora from Moana' costume creator:
My 5 year old son is wearing the costume. He absolutely LOVES the Kakamora from the movie Moana and this year he wanted to be one of those characters. We couldn't find at a store and the ones we did find he didn't like because his face would show, which is odd because last year he couldn't keep his mask on. This costume was a bit more challenging for me because I am by no means a seamstress so my pattern making skills are way off which is why it was a bit off on one side.
I made a pattern using an actual coconut for the body, which was mistake one because one I started gluing I realized he needed room to walk. I had to adjust the pattern at the bottom. Once I had the pattern from the small coconut I traced it onto clear plastic sheet that was then projected onto the wall to make it bigger (his size). I traced the pattern onto upholstery foam. I used spray glue to put it together. I cut out two large holes for the eyes and covered the eyes with black screen material I bought at the hardware store. I added 3 layers of the material so that it looked dark enough from the outside but he could still see through it. I made a pattern of where the face was going to be and taped it before I spray painted the whole thing. I wanted to add the paint first to make sure the green foam would be completely covered. Once dry I added some jute to the outside using Mod Podge. I figured this would act as a sealant and glue. The jute was very messy because I had to brush it out using a dog brush to get the fine strands I needed. I tried to focus adding the jute where my pattern lines were and then I added another coat of spray paint. Gluing the brown felt for the face was a bit challenging because the whole thing was pretty round and my felt wasn't laying down very well. I ended up having to cut a small V to make it fit properly but by the end of his school parade with all the kids touching, pulling and him bending over it started to lift up on that particular section.
I made the bone on the top of his head out of felt and stuffed it with left over foam and batting. My glue was not working for attaching it so I ended up using hot glue and also poked holes to insert pipe wire to secure the bone from the inside.
The shoes were made out of a pair of slippers from the dollar store and covered with felt. Added thick foam to the bottom to make soles for the shoes. The toes were made by using embroidery floss. The claws I glued on made it about half way through the night. He lost two of them. I also made his some arm gloves using some pink pantyhose I bought at the dollar store. He is also wearing another pair as pants and is probably the only time he will EVER wear pink.
