Lego Benny & Green Lantern Costumes

Trick r Treat! Hello, my 7 year old identical twin boys, Aidan & Logan, love legos and the Lego movie. So, it didn't surprise me when they asked me (Dad) to make them legos for Halloween 2015. I told them yes and to pick out a favorite lego character they would like to be. One picked Benny (astronaut) and the other Green Lantern. First thing I did was grab a lego mini-figure and took some measurements from it and applied the same to my boys (luckily they are the same height, width, weight, etc.) This way when I started making them it was an assembly line of sorts.

Material consisted of cardboard, 1 large sheet of styrofoam insulation (Lowe's), hot glue gun & glue, cardboard mailing tubes, cardboard cement tubes, fabric, Mod Podge, paint, and foam. Cost of making each costume was about $40. Time was about 8-10 hours each. I created both in about 2-3 weeks working around work and family time.

Let me say, I love making costumes. I have made several for me over the years and that is why my boys wanted me to make theirs. It is fun working with them and they are learning at the same time.

First, I made the body and legs (cardboard and hot glue) On all the insides of the body parts, I cut small pieces of foam and glued so when they wore the costume it was snug to their bodies and fit comfortably. The heads were made out of the cement tubes and styrofoam. For the hair, I glued layers of styrofoam together and then carved away and sanded. The helmet was all styrofoam - same procedure from hair. I had to paper mache the helmet for smoother texture. The arms/hands were made out of cardboard tube mailers and fabric. The air pack was mailer tubes topped by styrofoam. All pieces then were double coated with mod podge to create a base layer before painting. I used primer over everything and then painted the rest. On green lantern I created all the cutouts on body and cut and glued rather than paint.

The finished product came out great! The boys absolutely loved them and both were treated like celebrities from all the other kids and families while out trick r treating. Only problem now is - I'm already hearing what can we be next year Dad... :)
