A word from Anneke, the 'Spirit Walker' costume creator:
This is my 11 year old son’s costume. We worked together to make it. He found a costume online which was the inspiration for it. The base of the costume is a pair of black pants and a sweatshirt. We attached layers of white fabric (curtains from the thrift store) and grey cheese cloth to a base of foam (mattress topper) to cover the back and legs. The front legs are crutches that have been covered with foam and fabric as well. His “hoves” are large coffee cans that I bolted his shoes to and he painted black and then covered with fabric and twine. The only purchased costume item is the plain white mask, which was about $7. The horns are made from a cardboard template covered with spray foam insulation, carved into shape, coated with paper mache, and painted. We used hot glue, zip ties, duct tape, and sewing to piece everything together. It took about 25 hours over the course of a month to make everything. There are even lights wrapped around the base of the horns which can be turned on and off with controllers in his pockets. The total cost of the costume including the clothing, fabric, spray paint, foam, etc. was about $100.
