A word from Irene, the 'Steve from Minecraft' costume creator:
My 10 year old son LOVES playing the game Minecraft, so of course he wanted to be Steve for Halloween this year! Luckily, Dad has access to lots of heavy corrugated cardboard at work that is thrown into the recycle bin every day, so we started collecting it since we needed a LOT of it. The entire costume, including the diamond pickaxe is constructed from cardboard. I started with the head, and constructed a 13"x13" box. Then based on the head's size, took my son's height and width measurements to determine how big to make the body and arms. I measured, scored, cut, and folded all the body parts and then used a hot glue gun to form them. I lucked out and found a great high resolution "skin" online that I printed out and used for both the head and diamond pickaxe. For the body and arms, i decided to paint them using inexpensive acrylic craft paints that I already had. For the pickaxe, I used spray adhesive on two layers of corrugated cardboard to make it nice and sturdy. I printed out 2 pickaxes, adhered one to the cardboard, using it as a guide, cut it out with a utility knife, and then for the other side of the pickaxe, I cut out the second print, and THEN adhered it. I found that the head was moving around too much, so I hot glued some long velcro strips at the bottom of head, and shoulders of the body to keep the head from moving. This made it much easier for my son to walk around. Cardboard legs were out of the question as far as mobility goes, so he just wore blue jeans.
