A word from Irene, the 'Steve from Minecraft' costume creator:

My 10 year old son LOVES playing the game Minecraft, so of course he wanted to be Steve for Halloween this year! Luckily, Dad has access to lots of heavy corrugated cardboard at work that is thrown into the recycle bin every day, so we started collecting it since we needed a LOT of it. The entire costume, including the diamond pickaxe is constructed from cardboard. I started with the head, and constructed a 13"x13" box. Then based on the head's size, took my son's height and width measurements to determine how big to make the body and arms. I measured, scored, cut, and folded all the body parts and then used a hot glue gun to form them. I lucked out and found a great high resolution "skin" online that I printed out and used for both the head and diamond pickaxe. For the body and arms, i decided to paint them using inexpensive acrylic craft paints that I already had. For the pickaxe, I used spray adhesive on two layers of corrugated cardboard to make it nice and sturdy. I printed out 2 pickaxes, adhered one to the cardboard, using it as a guide, cut it out with a utility knife, and then for the other side of the pickaxe, I cut out the second print, and THEN adhered it. I found that the head was moving around too much, so I hot glued some long velcro strips at the bottom of head, and shoulders of the body to keep the head from moving. This made it much easier for my son to walk around. Cardboard legs were out of the question as far as mobility goes, so he just wore blue jeans.

Thanks everyone!
Bee, did every kid who walked by your son go nuts when they saw him? Lol! Older kids were running up to my son, hugging him and telling him how awesome he looked. If you look at the last photo I took of my son, I originally put some buckram in place of the nose cut-out. I colored it brown to look like the nose. My son insisted we put the buckram in there so no one could see his face, but once we got out in the dark trick or treating, he asked me to pull it out, lol.

Fantastic! If my kids were still trick or treating I'd hire this woman to dress them up!

would you sell this?

#9 comment by Irene August 31, 2013

rocio, it is pretty beat up at this point, lol! But I am thinking about touching it up so my son can wear it again this year. My son wore it hard for Trick or treating & to school! Kids went NUTS when they saw this costume!!! There is an excellent tutorial online on how to make the body, and another great tutorial on how you can make the head plus templates for printing out. I used slightly different measurements and painted the body. It's really not too difficult, but just be sure to give yourself enough time if it's something you want to have for Halloween. I would start NOW, rather than wait just a week before like I did! If you go to a place that discards very LARGE cardboard boxes, such as an autobody shop at a dealership, you can collect all the cardboard you need. Luckily, my husband works in a body shop and he was able to bring home plenty of cardboard for me to use - and it was FREE. Good luck!

How did you attach the arms to the body?

#12 comment by Irene October 3, 2013

Sarah, they are not attached. The arms slide in all the way and do not attach to the body in order to keep full movement. My son was just holding onto the circle cut out for where his hands come out, but he complained that it was too uncomfortable. So I took some cardboard, rolled it up, and used a LOT glue and tape to make "handles" at the just the right spot that felt comfy for him to hold onto while he walked. It is not an easy costume to walk around in, especially in the dark for Trick or Treating, but he loved it so much, and all the attention he was getting, he forced himself, lol! Probably halfway through the night, I was carrying the arms!

Hi Irene

Where did you find the skins online? I hope you can help me!

Thanks

Roslyn

Hi Rosslyn,

I am sorry, I am unable to provide a link to the print out skins I used. It was a few years ago, so I don't remember. Try googling:Steve from minecraft skins for head. If I stumble across the exact ones I used, I will share the link.
