Jackie and Sal Costume

The costumes are based off of a photo from No Flutter's Deviant Art artwork. It is a gender swap of Jack Skellington and Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas! The costumes took my boyfriend and I about three months to make so this might be a long post, sorry about that!

Jackie:

I started with Jackie's shoes. I bought a nice pair online and modified them. I glued on worbla (thermoplastic) onto the boots to create the swirls and painted the entire boots with oil based paint. Shoes done. Next I started with my umbrella. I bought a cheap devil pitchfork and removed the pitchfork part. I drilled holes at the top of the pole and put thick wires through them. Then I placed a black see-through fabric on top and hand sewed the wires with fabric to say together. Then I put small wooden balls (painted black) at the end of each wire. Lastly I glued pretty laces all around it. Umbrella done. For my dress i only bought a corset and tutu's (for the poofy-ness) and use an old t-shirt. I use fabric tapes and covered the entire corset with it. Then I placed fabric on it. Then with poster paper and worbla I made Jackie's bat and glued it on the corset. Top done. Next the jacket. I took one of my old t-shirts and cut it short to make a short cardigan-looking base. Then I hand sewed the fabric on top and kept building up the jacket from the shoulders to the rest of arms. Jacket done. My skirt is two pieces. For the main part of the skirt I use the tutus as a based and hand sewed them together. Then I hand sewed the fabric around it. Next I use fabric markers and white acrylic paint and drew on the designs on it based off of my reference photo. and lastly, I hand sewed pretty laces on the borders of the skirt. Main skirt done. For the second piece I hand sewed the two pieces of fabric onto a long piece of ribbon. Then I hand sewed lace on one of the pieces and then painted and drew on the fabrics. Second piece done. I did my own makeup and used a white contacts to fully complete the creepy look.

Sal:

For Sal's jacket we bought thick interfacing for the base of the jacket. It was our first time making a jacket so I had my boyfriend laying on the interfacing while I traced around his body. My Boyfriend hand sewed the patches on the inside and I ironed the patches on the outside. Next we glued black yarn to border each patch. Then I drew some significant designs Sally's dress originally has with a few I made up. Jacket done. Sal's shirt was pretty simple. We bought a long sleeve shirt and cut off the sleeves and some pieces of the bottom of the shirt. Then we used fabric tapes to places the colored fabrics on it and hand sewed the side of the shirt for it to hold. then I drew designs in it. Shirt done. For the sleeve straps my boyfriend cut up some strips of fabric and use fabric tapes to fold them nicely. Then he used the sleeve that were cut off from the shirt and hand stitched the strips to the sleeves. Sleeves done. For his pants we use old pj pants as a stencil and traced it on the fabrics. The I hand sewed all the pieces together and used fabric tapes to place patches on them. My boyfriend borders the patches with black yarn. Pants done. We then added our own little twist to the costume. We made Sal a light up cane! We bought a golden costume prop and cut the top part. Then I took of my empty DIY ornament and fogged it up by rubbing the inside with sand paper. Then my boyfriend drilled holes on the bottom side of the ornament and hot glued some lights that came out of a small Halloween toy inside the ornament. The holes allows hime to switch the lights on and off. Then he glued the ornament to the golden stick and done! Surprisingly, he was able to make the perfect color for Sal. And I helped him with the stitches. He also uses a red wig and white contact lenses.
