King & Queen of Spades Costume

My boyfriend and I are wearing this DIY costume that I constructed with inspiration from the internet itself, specifically Pinterest! Browsing for ideas I came upon this little number! I assessed what needed to be done - gather inexpensive supplies such as free cardboard (from my local Walmart) for the cards themselves, white computer paper, markers, fabric, yarn, hot glue and all of the other details to make it become a reality. The face paint may have been my boyfriend's least favorite part, but he hung in there!

The how-to instructions would be to this affect:
Tunic & Dress
You'll need to start by measuring yourself or a dress you already own for guidance. Fold the fabric in half and cut your head hole and the armholes which will be cut into a bell shape.
For a tunic, simply measure where you would like it to fall. Two-meters of fabric should work for someone about 5'6" tall. I used hot glue when it came to adding felt flowers and cut out spades on these.

Crown & Headdress
More ribbon and felt spades were decorated on these pieces. They are made out of card paper and yellow craft foam since it's very thin and flexible. You will glue the foam shape to the paper (bending it into a round crown shape) and let it dry.

KING
More card stock paper is used here since it's so sturdy and I could draw on it. The straight lines acted as "hair". For the beard, cut five small U-shapes from the card paper then, we attach these to a strip of card paper in a half-moon shape and glue to the inside of the hair panels.

QUEEN
Similar to the King's crown but, to make the headdress, you can use leftover fabric from the tunic and attach the red behind the top of the crown.

The best part of DIY is just how proud you feel that YOU created it! Is there a better time of year to take advantage of such a thing!? All hail Halloween! :)
