A word from Michele, the 'Somebody That I Used To Know' costume creator:
All summer long, every five seconds (it felt like), my boyfriend and I would hear the song "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye and Kimbra. Of course, when the song comes on the radio, you have to sing it as loudly and obnoxiously as possible. Come October, with that song forever implanted in our heads, we decided that painting ourselves like Gotye and Kimbra from the music video would be a really original, fun to make, and relatively easy costume to do for Halloween. So the Friday after Halloween (which was on a school night this year, lame) we rushed around town to different Halloween stores, rummaging through the clearance items for wigs and body paint. We were headed to a party that night, and later, the bars. I actually got my wig online sometime before, but we bought a long, curly brown-haired wig for Dan and then washed it and cut it so that it looked more like Gotye's hair. For body paint we got white, black, grey, green, blue, brown, yellow, and red, as well as some paint sponges. From those colors we were able to mix whatever shade we needed. We found face-paint crayons to make the black lines between blocks of color. Then we decided that I probably shouldn't walk around the party or the bars topless so went to the mall and found a cheap tube top bra in flesh color that we could paint over. We also decided to wear jeans and not paint our legs (so that we could sit down without getting paint everywhere, no one would appreciate that!) Once loaded up with supplies, we headed back to my kitchen to paint each other. I pulled up the video on YouTube so we could paint ourselves similar to the artists. In the interest of time, we did similar but not exact replicas on ourselves. We thought it would only take an hour. It ended up taking two and a half hours, but the time flew by with a little Champange and the fun of painting! The paint does get EVERYWHERE but comes off with soap and water. The costume was a real hit at the party (some people needed an explanation) and in the bar district; every place we walked into, someone would scream out "Hey, it's Gotye!" The only thing that would have made the night more epic is if we had gotten to karaoke the song! Somebodyyyyyyyyyyyyy......
