This homemade costume for couples entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Jeremy, the 'The Maitlands from Beetlejuice' costume creator:

This is my fiance and myself dressed up as the Maitlands from Beetlejuice. The masks are entirely home made aside from the wigs using styrofoam(spheres for eyeballs and a block carved into the tounge), plaster of paris, newspaper paper mache ( for the heads) , some home made clay for the teeth, and acrylic paint. Also a fake book storage box with a printout of the handbook for the recently deceased cover glued on top. this also give me a place to store my fingertip eyeballs

Step 1: score the foam core on one side in strategic places to form the basic shape of the parts of the head, cut to fit wearers head and tape into place securely. Carve tongue out of styrofoam block.

Step 2: cover the foam core structure with flower/water and newspaper paper mache until everything is strong and secure when dry. cover styrofoam balls and tongue with plaster of paris.

Step 3: Paint mask, tongue and eyes with acrylic paint, and when dry coat with clear glossy protective layer that gives it the moist look, and form teeth out of clay made with cornstarch, salt and water.

Final step: attach pieces with hot glue gun and velcro pieces for Barbaras wig so that it was removable and able to be worn without the mask.

Final Final step: wear in public and have complete strangers appreciate what you made and take photos on their phones to show other people. and enter costume contest to gain prestige among my peers
