A word from Courtney, the 'Voodoo Doll and her Voodoo King' costume creator:
My boyfriend and I had just visited New Orleans and were inspired by the voodoo magic history. We used that inspiration to come up with our costume idea.
For the Voodoo Doll costume: First, I wanted to find the perfect doll-like dress and stockings. I found both but they were white so I had to use tan fabric die purchased from Michaels to get the perfect burlap coloration. Next I found real burlap strips from Walmart and applied them to various areas of the dress to give it a more rough/ beat up look. Then I cut out a heart shape from red felt and hot clued it to the dress while using pillow stuffing to give it a 3-D appearance- this also allowed me to easily poke through the heart with the giant ball-point pins that I crafted. To make the ball-point pins I used large crochet needles found at Walmart and applied painted styrofoam balls to the ends. I also used these pins as accents for my hair. To finish the costume I used black permanent marker to draw a criss-cross rough seeing pattern to give the doll costume a patched appearance. I painted my face the same way and used face paint to create doll-inspired make-up. At the Halloween party we attended I carried around one of the voodoo pins and pretended to poke people which got a lot of laughs.
My boyfriends costume was the Voodoo King. He wore black clothing that he already had including a black jacket and top hat along with a purple tie. He created a homemade voodoo stick which was a long painted branch with a skull (purchased from a Halloween store) that he hot glues to the top. He decorated the stick with various feathers, chains, and skeleton bones. He used the same decorations to add detail to his top- hat. He wore skeleton gloves and a skeleton necklace for extra flair. He topped off his costume by painting his face like a dead skeleton. He also carried a few of my voodoo pins in his front pocket to poke people as well for laughs.
