How did you make the Toad-hat for your baby? And how old was she?
We're about to dress up like a "Mario-family". And our little girl on 3months will be Toad. We just need to know how to make that hat. :)

Hi-
I had a white sweat shirt (but you could use any white material) and I cut a big circle out of the back of the sweat shirt (as big of a circle as I could). With that circle, I sewed a casing and put a drawstring around the outer edge of the circle. If you don't have a sewing machine, you could use a larger needle and some white embroidery thread and just 'sew' the thread all the way around the edge, and then you can use that string as a draw string.
Find a plastic bowl that fits your baby's head, but is a little too big, and lightly pad the inside of the bowl so that baby's had isn't just inside a cold hard bowl. I used hot glue to attach the thin padding to the inside of the bowl.
Pull the drawstring so that the opening of it is just big enough to go over the bowl which is on baby's head. Before putting it on the bowl that is on baby's head, stuff it with stuffing to get the shape that you want it to be (keeping in mind that you should leave the middle slightly hallow since the bowl will also be going in it. You can take ribbon or thick elastic and sew on either side of the white hat part to go under baby's chin. Then when you're happy with the shape of the white mushroom part, you can hot glue the bowl that fits on baby's head right into the mushroom part. Then cut red fabric circles and hand sew on. You could also use the craft foam sheets and use red and hot glue the circles on to it if you're not a sewer.
Let me know if I confused you at all!
I hope it turns out well for you!

Thank you very much. It's a big help.

#5 comment by Dayna May 22, 2014

Thank you! At the time she was almost 7 months.

You should make a YouTube video!

This is darling! I have two little boys and they would love this costume! Did you make the overalls also? If so, how did you do it???
Thanks!

#8 comment by Dayna Austin September 21, 2014

@Lynn, thank you! I never considered it to be you tube worthy, but perhaps it is!

@Aubrey, thanks! It is cute isn't it? I did make the overalls; I made everything except for the green and red shirts. I atually found two bright blue blankets and cut them up. I saw a tutorial on line- if you have Pinterest I'm sure you'll find tons (or you could take your little boys pants and use those as a guide and add the bib and straps). Or if you're not a sewer, blue denim overalls would work too. Then I found big wooden buttons that I painted yellow. Good luck!

How did you make the vest? I could not find a pattern ANYWHERE! Love the hat idea! Beats making darts!

#13 comment by Dayna Austin October 22, 2014

[at]Jessenia, at this time I don't have enough time with having two littles ones and a full time job; unfortunately I havn't had much time for sewing lately.
[at]kaylee, I didn't use a pattern, I just made it as I went, good luck finding a pattern!

hi Dayna Austin do you make these to sell at all im willing to pay good dollars ... michelle

#21 comment by Dayna Austin June 18, 2015

Michelle, I hadn't planned on doing much sewing in the near future. I work a full time job and have two little ones and a household that keeps me very very busy. I would love to help you out but am so busy at the moment. Someday I'd love to be able to quit my job and open up a shop with all my home made creations for sale ;)

#22 comment by Crystine October 15, 2015

Hi Dayna, this is truly beautiful. You did a great job! I am so not crafty like this.

Any chance you would consider selling this costume to me? My LO is going to be 7 mos at the end of the month, and I'd love to get this for her.

#23 comment by Dayna Austin October 16, 2015

Hi Crystine, it is such a compliment that you would love to buy this for your little one, but at this time I am not wanting to sell it. Thanks so much!

#24 comment by jade March 30, 2016

hi would you be interested in making me one like this the toad hat and selling it to me

#25 comment by Dayna April 3, 2016

Hi Jade.
I'm not planning on making anything like this in the near future. I'm pregnant with baby #3 and we are packing stuff in our house to move. Sorry. But if you look in the above comments I believe I wrote how to make one. its not so hard, I'm sure you could make one!

#26 comment by Priscilla September 9, 2016

Are you still not willing to sell The hat?

#27 comment by Dayna September 9, 2016

Hi Priscilla-
No, I'm not going to sell it. I just had another baby and I'm sure he will be wearing it. Thanks!

#28 comment by Johanna August 2, 2017

Hi Dayna,

Love the toad costume, any chance you could show me what time of bowl you used to make the hat?

#29 comment by Dayna Austin August 2, 2017

Oh gosh Joanna- I dont even remember, it was a few years ago now.
But, I can tell you, I would have picked some sort of light weight plastic bowl that was about the same size and shape as baby's head. I would have picked a light colored one too, as you may be able to see a bit of it around baby's head if looking up into the hat.
I moat likely picked it up at a thrift store.
Good luck!
