A word from Stephanie, the 'Cute Scarecrows' costume creator:
My daughters Eyana and Emery are wearing the costumes I made. I really wanted to make my kids costumes this year so I came up with this cute scarecrow idea. The materials you will need to make these scarecrow costumes is: Burlap, sunflowers, fall leaves, rafia, hot glue gun, tulle in fall colors, crochet head bands and sewing materials. I have a sewing machine so that's what I used to make the burlap hats. I simply cut 3 triangles and a circle. Sewed the 3 triangles together and then attached to the circle piece. Before attaching to the circle you will need to cut another circle to fit your child's head. After I glued the sunflower in middle and decorated the rest with fall leaves and rafia. For the dresses you'll need to measure your child to see how long you want the tulle strips to be. You'll need to cut many strips double the length of your child because your going to loop it through the crochet head band. I used about 4-5 yards of each color for both dresses. (purchased tulle from hobby lobby and wal mart) The more tulle you use on the dress the fuller it will look. Once you've looped the tulle all around the head band you can start to loop some rafia on and glue some fall leaves. I also glued a sunflower on the headband in the center. I cut a random piece of material and glued it behind the sunflower so it wouldn't bother them. Now for the straps you can do haw ever you want. For one I just used the tulle to make simply straps so my daughter could wear a tank top under. Doing that you just cut a thick strip of tulle, then knot it through an opening in the front and to the back. All the leave I had glued blocked the knots. For the other dress I cut some strips of tulle and braided them, slide the braid through the front and just tide it around her neck when she wore it. Over all my girls loved them and I enjoyed making them. You can do so many different things as far as where to glue the leaves or put the rafia. One tip I would add is to also get dryer sheets and run each strip of tulle through it...it helps the tulle from bunching up and getting tangled. Also I had some left over burlap, fall leaves and rafia so I made some cute trick or treat bags to match the outfits! My cute scarecrows were a big hit Halloween night!
