This homemade costume for girls entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Stephanie, the 'Get your Head in the Game!' costume creator:

My daughter Saiylor is a dedicated 10 year old travel softball player. Her team (Lady Crushers '04) are definately in favor of girls wearing facemasks on the field for protection and this is an example of why we enforce it. :) We found the idea at a softball competition where a girl had this effect except on her batting helmet so we brought it to life. We completely designed this from scratch removing the skin of a softball and placing it on a foam ball(from craft dept., had to trim it down a little) to make it a little easier to wear without the extra weight. On the face portion of the design(avoided the hairline) we mixed toilet tissue and elmers glue to line the crease of the softball/face (this helps ball to adhere to face) and let dry or speed up drying with hairdryer. I used some deep purple/black eyeshadow to dust around the area to mimic the bruising effect. Once the tissue/glue combo has completely dried you can use any type of theatrical makeup to mimic the gruesome blood/clotting. However I went a little unique and used some of my mothers homemade blackberry jam and it gave an amazing effect of blood clotting factors. It also holds well when dryed with a hairdryer. The supplies used are very reasonably priced and easily removed with some warm water, soap and or shampoo. Hope you guys enjoy it...definately got the most head turns around our trick or treating area.

I'm wondering how you got the skin off without ruining the stitching, and how is the ball sticking to her head, headband?

Just cut the skin of the softball with a very sharp knife in whichever direction you choose. I didn't have any trouble with the seams falling apart but if you do, you might could put a touch of hot glue on the edge prior to placing the cover on the foam ball so that the seam doesn't unravel. Once I had the skin glued down to the foam ball, I used toilet tissue pulled as thin as possible covered in Elmers glue to attach the ball to the face. I only applied the glue/tissue mixture to the skin and not in the hair; however, I did apply the mixture all the way up the hairline under the ball for security. The glue/tissue mix is easy to wash out once you are done, with warm soapy water in shower.

Instead of using a regular hard softball i used one of those bouncy softballs that the 6U kids used to play with at the time. Then use a knife to slowly and and as evenly as you can round the ball (may have to still trim) so that you are cutting around the ball in half. You should then have half of a softball in your hand then just peel the the outer covering off of the inner ball material and then replace the outer covering over a styrofoam ball from the crafts department. you could put a little glue to help keep it on the foam if needed, but I just left enough foam ball to keep a tight fit and didn't have to use any glue to hold it down.

I would love the recipe for the clotting mixture! It looks great!

How do you avoid the hairline, if the ball is near her hair? Did you just leave the mixture and stuff off the softball where her hair is?
Please respond ASAP
