A word from Mattie, the 'Peacock' costume creator:
This is the peacock costume I made for my 5 year old daughter, Camryn. I wanted a costume that no other kid would have and a peacock is her favorite animal that she sees at the zoo. The mask was started with a party city mask that I altered by adding the white sequins and removing most of the feathers around the edge, leaving just the ones at the top of her head. She is wearing a short tutu that I made with an elastic band and various colors of tulle that can be found in the tail feathers of a peacock. She is also where a longer tutu made the same way with longer strands of tulle. The tail was made with a "Chinese fan" as the base so it can open and close like a real peacock tail. I extended dowel rods from the fan and covered them in a layer of gold tulle. I then attached about 500 peacock feathers to the front and back side of the rods and tulle. At the base of the tail I covered it in small brown feathers that can be found on a peacock so that the fan was not visible. The tail was attached to her with a ribbon loop attached to a glittery blue belt. The tail is under the short tutu and above the long tutu so that it blends in. I attached one loop of blue ribbon on each side of the tail so that Camryn can put her wrist through them to make her tail open when she leans forward to flip it up. Underneath it all, Camryn is wearing a shiny blue leotard and tights that match the color of peacocks legs. This costume took about 10-12 hours of work over about a week and a half. It was so fun to make and was a hit at Camryn's Halloween party at school where she just started kindergarten!
