Tinkerbell in a Flower Costume

My daughter, Alyssa- age 7, has Rett Syndrome and is wheelchair bound. We always try to go above and beyone to make her Halloween a special time for her to shine! We got the idea when we attended a Rett Conference at Disney World earlier this month and she LOVED Tinkerbell. The bright colors and Tinkerbell's sassy personality completely matched Alyssa's! We made the costume using chicken wire for the petals, weaved battery powered lights through the chicken wire, and then covered each petal with sparkly fabric. We zip-tied the petals to a Hoola Hoop that attaches to the back of her wheelchair. We then adorned the petals with blue glass bead "dew drops" and a few butterflies. We made her wand out of a wooden dowel (wrapped in ribbon) and sparkly foam sheets for the star. We wrapped two more sets of lights in yellow wired ribbon to make them sturdy and we wove her "fairy dust" around the flower above her head. Finally, we used artificial ivy, ferns, and grass to decorate her wheelchair and behind the flower petals. The costume has received amazing reactions. The best part is seeing Alyssa interact with people who typically would not approach a child in a wheelchair. She gets to be the "star" for once!!
