A word from Tanaja, the 'Maleficent and Diaval the Crow' costume creator:
After seeing Maleficent my kids were certain that's who they wanted to be for Halloween. We started browsing the internet for tons of pictures so we could get an idea of where we wanted to start from. We ended up choosing Maleficent in the fight scene where she gets her wings back and Diaval when Maleficent first turns him into a man (for a brief moment he's half man, half crow).
For both head pieces I blew up balloons to their head size and the paper mache'd newspaper to them. Once they were dried I cut them to fit better. We added newspaper horns to Maleficent's and then duct taped the entire thing and spray painted it black. We spray painted Diaval's black and then hot glued feathers. Their shirts and pants were made from black knit that I based off of a legging and shirt that fit them. For Diaval's I added wing inserts and we covered the entire back and front body with feathers. I made a cardboard beak and spray painted black. Maleficent's wings were done by shaping clothes hangers in the wing shape for the top. I then hot glued felt to each one and covered with strips of fabric that I cut into wing shapes. I stapled a board to them with elastic strips so it could be worn like a backpack. A quick fur vest and rock jewelry were made and they were complete!
