A word from Katherine, the 'Spongebob and Gary' costume creator:
My boys (Austin and Dylan) are the ultimate Spongebob fans, so when they wanted to be them for Halloween I did what any working mother would do - went shopping and searched online! Alas, after 10 different shops and a million web searches, I found nothing :( so, I was left to do it myself.
Spongebob was made by starting with cutting arm and head holes out of a large diaper box and then covered it with an egg crate mattress pad. Spray painted it yellow (MULTIPLE TIMES... that stuff just sucked the paint up!) and then used felt pieces for the clothes and face. The piece de resistance was the nose that we searched and searched for and finally found a large yellow crayon eraser that we shaped into a smooth end and glued on. Hot glue and staples were my right hand men during this process :)
Gary was made by sewing a pink throw pillow onto the back of a blue sweatsuit and a green underbelly onto the front of it... his eyes were fuzzy balls that were glues to a headband with coils.
Whew - I did it! They looked amazing, were totally happy, and even won a few contests :)
