A word from Paul, the 'Archangel' costume creator:
I came up with the idea of a group costume to accommodate a good mix of male and female characters, and thought X-Men would be perfect. I decided to be the one to do Archangel and set out to make blueprints on how to make the wings.
After some Youtube guidance, and some of my own ingenuity, I created 15 foot articulating wings using PVC pipe, hinges, pipe insulation, cardboard, and aluminum tape. I made sure to spray paint everything silver to match. My harness is made up of a wooden "T" with some PVC fittings holding the wings in place and covered up with a backpack on my shoulders and a weight lifting belt holding everything in place.
The PVC pipes that go up stay in place and have metal rings attached to them that end at the top of the articulating wing. I ran 100 lb framing wire up to attach, and hooked them up to handles at the bottom, so I could pull down and the wings would move up.
Each blade is cut to three inches (the width of the aluminum tape), and is attached to a piece of paperclip that runs through the PVC wing to allow each blade to swing.
Everything was then covered by cardboard forms, which were covered in aluminum tape to hide any screws. Also, to round out some areas, I used silver spray paint on pipe insulation and attached that throughout to hide more pipe.
The chest plate was part of something else that had been purchased prior....I just spray painted it and attached the "X" belt buckle.
The whole process took just over a month to complete and worked extremely well!
