A word from Jason, the 'Ares God of War' costume creator:
I Jason Ranic am wearing this costume. I've been a fan of the Greek culture like spartans , athens and greek gods, o that was my inspiration. I love to draw and recently got into painting to see how I do. I'm still learning but am doing well I think. Me and my gf are thinking about doing it for a side job helping people make costumes. We will go to micheals crafts and goodwill stores. Even the dollar store. My armour I bought from Bart's costume store for $20. It was a goldfish color very poorly painted. I spray painted it a dull black. I got some vynel and fake skeleton hands for the shoulder and hand painted them with layers of different colors to give them texture. I also used fake blood and painted it on. I added the gold curved pieces around the Medusa to give it a ares ram horn look and added a little blood. To attach them I used a black painted wiring. I made shoulder guards out of a belt and fake snakes and painted. I attached them with screw like clips which could be removed if necessary. My wooden shield I bought. I then added a mask I bought from goodwill. The snakes are large pipe wire cleaners and clear stones. I hand painted them and for the heads I hand painted but added glow in the dear nail polish to lighten it up and make it glow. The bronze paint I made by adding bronze spray paint and dark chocolate brown paint. Must clean brush in a paint thinner of some sort if you wish to reuse the brush. My arm guards I got from the dollar store and hand painted them and added them to some soccer arm guards I fabricated with a reddish snake skin pattern vynel. The shin guards I hand painted and added costume jewelry. I also added the top part from shoulder guards to make them 2 pieces and more realistic. As for my ax its a baseball bat and cardboard. After I constructed it I fiberglassed (resin) over the whole the thing to make it hard and one piece. Fiberglass works very well for constructing because anything it drys to becomes hard. The more layers you do the harder and more sturdy it is. Can turn fabric into a hard surface too which makes good for constructing curves and shapes and fill gaps. I found that shopping at goodwill mostly is a lot cheaper and can find almost everything you need from knick knacks to clothing and fabric. Plus you help out the needy which is a win win.The contests weren't too good around here.we lost because they voted by who ever gets the loudest cheers. Everyone mostly new each other so we had less people to cheer for us right off the bat. But I had fun making the costumes.
